Pigs
A group of pigs is a herd, a mature female pig is a sow and a mature male pig is known as a boar. Baby pigs are called piglets. Adults generally weigh between 320 – 450 kilograms. Pigs have four toes on each hoof, but walk on only two of their toes on each foot so that it looks like they are walking on tiptoe.
They are quite fast runners and good swimmers and are mainly active at night. Pigs are omnivores and their snouts are highly sensitive and are used for foraging and finding food. They are very clean animals and will go to the toilet away from places where they eat and sleep. Pigs need plenty of good cold drinking water, available on demand. A piglet can drink up to 15 litres a day and a lactating sow can drink about 45 litres a day.
